vice president hu zhengyue spoke at program celebrating 40 years of china-us people-to-people exchange

  on 23 january 2019, a seminar on “40 years of china-us people-to-people exchange: history, experience and challenges” was held in beijing. the program was hosted by chongyang institute for financial studies at renmin university of china (rdcy) and china-us people-to-people exchange research center.

  more than 200 people participated in the program including academics from renmin university of china, peking university, tsinghua university, beijing foreign studies university, beijing normal university, china institute of contemporary international relations, chinese academy of social sciences (cass), china center for contemporary world studies, and representatives from the media and the us embassy in beijing.

  mr. wu xiaoqiu, vice president of renmin university of china and director of china-us people-to-people exchange research center, mr. hu zhengyue, vice president of the china public diplomacy association (cpda), and mr. du kewei, director of foreign cultural exchange center of the ministry of education, spoke at the opening ceremony.

  vice president wu xiaoqiu stressed that the establishment of diplomatic relations between china and the us is of great significance not only to the two countries but also to the world. in the world of globalization, it is not right for any country to stress “my country first”. global powers in the world should take balanced perspectives and consider balanced development of the global economy in a responsible way. he hoped that china-us people-to-people exchange will push the bilateral relationship toward the right direction.

  vice president hu zhengyue said that people-to-people exchanges have made important contribution to the development of china-us relations. they have enriched the bilateral exchanges and will serve as driving force for the development of this relationship for a long time to go. he stressed that steady and long-term development of china-us relations relies on the understanding, support and participation of the people from the two countries. both sides should strive to create positive social and public opinion atmosphere by strengthening rather than weakening people-to-people exchanges, increasing rather than decreasing trust amongst people, and resolving rather than aggravating conflicts between the two. as major players and important driving force for china-us cultural exchanges, think-tanks and the media from both countries should stand steady, take responsibility, expand and deepen the breadth and depth of china-us people-to-people exchanges, work together to promote china-us relations based on coordination, cooperation and stability, and better serve the people of the two countries and the world.

  rdcy released the report “building foundation for major powers cooperation: 40-year history, experience and prospects of china-us people-to-people exchanges” at the program. according to the report, 40 years of china-us people-to-people exchanges demonstrated that people-to-people exchanges between the two countries have enhanced understanding and recognition between the people, built shared emotions, and played as foundation and barometers for the bilateral relationship. these exchanges are not only the driving force for china-us relations but also a reflection of status of the relationship. china-us people-to-people exchange now faces many challenges and needs to adjust itself against the new historical background. both sides need to enhance and improve the current mechanism platforms, increasing the mutuality and substance of people-to-people exchanges, motivate all resources and enhance the creativity, popularity and civilianization of people-to-people exchanges, and establish and improve the evalsuation system of china-us relations to elevate its ability to prevent and deal with crisis.
